Adenium obesum — Scarlet Double. Scarlet ruffled doubles that catch warm evening light and seem to glow from inside, over a clean bottle caudex with a spray of buds waiting their turn. It flowers in repeated flushes, so from late spring into autumn there is almost always colour up top. For a red that leans bright and energetic rather than dark and moody, this is the pick.

How to start it

• Pot: free-draining mix — 50% cactus soil, 30% pumice, 20% coarse sand — in a pot with a hole.

• Cold: USDA 10–12 outdoors; elsewhere above 50°F / 10°C.
