Why gardeners plant Velvet Violet

Velvet Violet grows more upright than most hostas, with leaves that lift away from the crown instead of flattening into a disc. The surface has a soft, almost matte nap that makes the violet read deeper than it is.

Because it is tall and narrow rather than wide, it fits into gaps where a spreading hosta would crowd its neighbours. Pair it with low ferns or epimedium to show off the vertical habit.

What actually arrives

You receive one dormant bare-root division — a root crown with 1–2 visible eyes and fleshy storage roots, packed in moist peat inside a breathable bag.

Hostas are not true bulbs. There is no papery tunic and no basal plate, so do not expect an onion-shaped bulb: what ships is the crown the grower lifts and grades. Dormancy is when a hosta travels best, and it is completely normal for the roots to look dry and leafless on arrival.

How to plant

1. Unpack on arrival and soak the roots for 30 minutes.
2. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots flat, about 4–6 in deep.
3. Set the crown 1 in below soil level with the eyes pointing up.
4. Backfill, firm gently, water in thoroughly.
5. Top-dress with compost. No fertiliser in the first season.
