Why gardeners plant Teal Frost

Teal Frost leans greener than the pure blues — a cool teal that reads blue in shade and greener in sun. From midsummer it throws silver-white spikes that sit close to the foliage rather than towering over it.

Low and wide, it makes a good groundcover-scale hosta for filling space under shrubs, and it is one of the more tolerant of dry shade once established.

What actually arrives

You receive one dormant bare-root division — a root crown with 1–2 visible eyes and fleshy storage roots, packed in moist peat inside a breathable bag.

Hostas are not true bulbs. There is no papery tunic and no basal plate, so do not expect an onion-shaped bulb: what ships is the crown the grower lifts and grades. Dormancy is when a hosta travels best, and it is completely normal for the roots to look dry and leafless on arrival.

How to plant

1. Unpack on arrival and soak the roots for 30 minutes.
2. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots flat, about 4–6 in deep.
3. Set the crown 1 in below soil level with the eyes pointing up.
4. Backfill, firm gently, water in thoroughly.
5. Top-dress with compost. No fertiliser in the first season.
