Why gardeners plant Silver Tide

Silver Tide puts on two shows. First the foliage: deep blue, faintly silvered, with pronounced veining. Then, from midsummer, a drift of silver-white spikes that stay upright without staking.

A closer look

Slightly taller than most blues, which makes it useful at the back of a shade border or in front of a dark hedge. Cut a few scapes for the vase — they last well.

What actually arrives

You receive one dormant bare-root division — a root crown with 1–2 visible eyes and fleshy storage roots, packed in moist peat inside a breathable bag.

Hostas are not true bulbs. There is no papery tunic and no basal plate, so do not expect an onion-shaped bulb: what ships is the crown the grower lifts and grades. Dormancy is when a hosta travels best, and it is completely normal for the roots to look dry and leafless on arrival.

How to plant

  1. Unpack on arrival and soak the roots for 30 minutes.
  2. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots flat, about 4–6 in deep.
  3. Set the crown 1 in below soil level with the eyes pointing up.
  4. Backfill, firm gently, water in thoroughly.
  5. Top-dress with compost. No fertiliser in the first season.

Shipping & guarantee

Ships within 5–7 business days. Transit 8–25 business days. 30-day growth guarantee — if the division fails to break dormancy, we replace it.

Hostas are browsed by deer and rabbits. In high-pressure areas, plant inside a fence or use a repellent from emergence.
