Why gardeners plant Royal Cobalt

Royal Cobalt stays small and stays blue. Where most blues fade or scorch, this one keeps a clean royal tone on a plant that tops out around fourteen inches, which makes it unusually useful for containers and narrow borders.

The leaf surface is genuinely glossy rather than waxy, so it reflects light and reads bright even in deep shade. Divide every four or five years to keep the clump tight.

What actually arrives

You receive one dormant bare-root division — a root crown with 1–2 visible eyes and fleshy storage roots, packed in moist peat inside a breathable bag.

Hostas are not true bulbs. There is no papery tunic and no basal plate, so do not expect an onion-shaped bulb: what ships is the crown the grower lifts and grades. Dormancy is when a hosta travels best, and it is completely normal for the roots to look dry and leafless on arrival.

How to plant

1. Unpack on arrival and soak the roots for 30 minutes.
2. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots flat, about 4–6 in deep.
3. Set the crown 1 in below soil level with the eyes pointing up.
4. Backfill, firm gently, water in thoroughly.
5. Top-dress with compost. No fertiliser in the first season.
