Adenium obesum — Onyx Veil. Petals so dark they need sunlight to read as purple at all, each one holding a small pale-pink star in the centre that stops the flower looking like a hole. Under it sits a caudex with deep vertical ridges and a genuine twist — the kind of structure that takes years to form and is hard to find on a plant at this price.

What you get

How to start it

• Pot: shallow, wide, and light in colour so the black flowers separate from the pot. Free-draining 50/30/20 mix.
• Water: 7 dry days, then soak-and-dry. Keep water out of the ridges where it can pool.
• Light: 6+ hours of direct sun — without it the flowers read as flat black.
• Cold: USDA 10–12; indoors above 50°F / 10°C.
