Ivory Chapel Dahlia Bulbs
$24.99 – $85.99Price range: $24.99 through $85.99
A formal ivory white that reads clean at any distance, with petals tight enough to hold their shape in a vase for a week. The most useful white in a cutting garden. Ships dormant as graded tubers with a visible eye.
White is the hardest color to get right. Most whites go cream on the plant and grey in the bucket. This one starts faintly warm and stays there — no green cast, no blue cast, and the petals are broad enough that the flower keeps its outline when it’s packed into a bucket with other stems. Photographed against a stone colonnade, which is roughly the look it gives in a border: formal, upright, and slightly too good for a vegetable bed.
What you get
- Graded tubers with a visible eye, packed in peat.
- Fully double blooms 5–6 in with petals that stay cupped rather than flattening out.
- Stems 30–36 in — strong enough for a tall arrangement without wire.
In a vase
Cut in the cool of the morning, strip the lower leaves, and change the water every two days. The hollow stems sour fast in warm water, which is what shortens vase life in dahlias — not the flower.
Planting
- Wait for warm soil. Plant two weeks after your last frost date, once the soil holds 60°F / 15°C at 4 in deep. Cold soil rots tubers before they wake.
- Set them 4–6 in deep, eye facing up, with 2–3 in of soil over the crown. Space 15–18 in apart so air moves between plants.
- Water once at planting, then hold off until shoots break the surface — a soaking wet tuber with no roots has nowhere to put the water.
- Full sun, 6+ hours. Stake at planting if you want straight stems; adding supports later breaks roots.
Season & hardiness
- Blooms 8–10 weeks after planting and keeps going until the first hard frost.
- Hardy in USDA zones 8–11. In zones 3–7 lift the tubers after frost blackens the foliage, or grow as an annual.
- Pinch the center shoot at about 12 in to double the stem count; more stems, smaller blooms.
- Deadhead spent flowers every few days. Left to seed, the plant stops producing new buds.
