Cream-to-copper leaf edges that warm up a blue-and-green shade border, and one of the fastest hostas to fill out. Hardy in USDA zones 3–9, ships dormant as graded bulbs.
Why gardeners plant Ember
Ember is the hosta that warms up a blue-and-green shade border. The leaf edges pick up a cream-to-copper cast in sun, so the clump reads as if it is lit from within on dull days. It is also one of the faster hostas to fill out — expect a plant worth showing off in its second full season.

What actually arrives
You receive dormant, field-grown bulbs — firm, graded roots with visible eyes — packed in a breathable moisture-retaining medium with a variety label and a printed planting card. They will look dry on arrival. That is normal: dormant bulbs are shipped dry on purpose, because damp packing in transit is what rots them.
They are not seeds. Bulbs give you a plant that flowers this year or next; seed-grown hostas take three to four years to reach the same size.
How to plant
- Soak the bulbs in a bowl of room-temperature water for 1–2 hours before planting. Do not leave them overnight.
- Dig a hole 2–3 inches deep and wide enough to spread the roots without bending them. Loosen the soil at the bottom.
- Set the bulb with the eyes (the small pointed buds) facing up and just at soil level. Cover and firm gently — do not compact.
- Water deeply once, then keep the soil evenly moist — not soggy — until shoots appear. That is usually 2–4 weeks depending on soil temperature.
- Mulch 2 inches of leaf mould or bark, keeping it clear of the crown. This is what keeps hostas happy through a dry August.
Care after the first year
Hostas are close to maintenance-free once established. Water in dry spells, cut the flower stems after blooming if you do not want seed, and clear the dead foliage after the first hard frost. Divide clumps every four to five years in early spring if they get crowded — that is also how you get free plants.
Slugs are the only real pest. A ring of gritty mulch or a nematode drench in early spring is enough; thick-leaved varieties like this one are less palatable to them than thin-leaved types.
