Why gardeners plant Cobalt Spire

Cobalt Spire combines a saturated royal-blue leaf with tall, clean white scapes. The flower spikes rise well clear of the foliage and stay upright, which gives the plant a formal, upright outline rather than a soft mound.

What actually arrives

You receive one dormant bare-root division — a root crown with 1–2 visible eyes and fleshy storage roots, packed in moist peat inside a breathable bag.

Hostas are not true bulbs. There is no papery tunic and no basal plate, so do not expect an onion-shaped bulb: what ships is the crown the grower lifts and grades. Dormancy is when a hosta travels best, and it is completely normal for the roots to look dry and leafless on arrival.

How to plant

1. Unpack on arrival and soak the roots for 30 minutes.
2. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots flat, about 4–6 in deep.
3. Set the crown 1 in below soil level with the eyes pointing up.
4. Backfill, firm gently, water in thoroughly.
5. Top-dress with compost. No fertiliser in the first season.
