Why gardeners plant Ember Wing

Ember Wing is the most graphic plant in the group. The blade centre is blue-green; the margin breaks into warm amber and orange, and the boundary between the two moves as the leaf matures, so no two leaves match.

The variegation is stable, not a temporary spring flush, and it holds through the season. Plant it where you can see it up close — a path edge, a low wall, a doorstep pot.

What actually arrives

You receive one dormant bare-root division — a root crown with 1–2 visible eyes and fleshy storage roots, packed in moist peat inside a breathable bag.

Hostas are not true bulbs. There is no papery tunic and no basal plate, so do not expect an onion-shaped bulb: what ships is the crown the grower lifts and grades. Dormancy is when a hosta travels best, and it is completely normal for the roots to look dry and leafless on arrival.

How to plant

1. Unpack on arrival and soak the roots for 30 minutes.
2. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots flat, about 4–6 in deep.
3. Set the crown 1 in below soil level with the eyes pointing up.
4. Backfill, firm gently, water in thoroughly.
5. Top-dress with compost. No fertiliser in the first season.
