Sunset Peach Lily Bulbs

Lilium Oriental Hybrid — Sunset Peach. Sunset Peach gets its name from the way the colour moves. The throat is a deep, hot orange that fades through gold and soft apricot before resolving into clean cream at the petal tips — the exact sequence of a summer sky about twenty minutes before dark.

It is a warm, generous flower rather than a dramatic one. Blooms are large, open and lightly fragrant, and they keep coming over a long window because the buds open in sequence up the stem. In a white or blue border it adds a glow; in an orange-and-yellow border it disappears into its own colour, which can be its own pleasure.

Cut it for the table when the first flower is half open. The remaining buds will finish indoors.

How to grow it

• Plant: 6 in / 15 cm deep, 8–10 in apart, in full sun and well-drained soil. Pointy end up. Mark the spot — lilies are late to emerge in spring.
• Water: soak after planting, then whenever the top inch of soil dries. Never let water sit in the hole.
• Light: 6+ hours of direct sun; light afternoon shade keeps the flowers from fading.
• Cold: fully hardy in USDA zones 4–9. Mulch the first winter; no lifting needed.
• After flowering: cut only the flower stems. Let the foliage yellow on its own — that is next year’s bulb being built.
